2020 Hyundai SUV Safety Ratings

Once upon a time, safety was only a priority niche automakers had and only with the aim of standing out from the crowd. But things have changed and consumers today demand cars that protect and technologies that save lives. Third-party agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety were established in order to provide independent studies and collision testings on the latest vehicles to see how well each stood up to what their auto manufacturers promised. Today, NHTSA and IIHS are the most trusted authorities when it comes to determining a model's safeness and their latest released make it clear that the 2020 Hyundai SUV line-up once again proves to be the safe and reliable consumer choice.

In 2019, an astounding ten new Hyundai models earned either a Top Safety Pick+ or a Top Safety Pick rating, the two highest ratings available from the IIHS. This meant that more Hyundai moels earned safety awards than any other auto manufacturer. This year, once again, Hyundai has come out on top and has particularly earned some significant recognition for three of its 2020 Hyundai SUV models. The following is a look at those models and what makes them a strong consumer pick:

The Three 2020 Hyundai SUV Models That Excelled in Safety Ratings

  1. 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe. While the IIHS ratings aren't yet out, the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe has earned a full five-star rating from NHTSA and its predecessor, the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, earned a Top Safety Pick from IIHS. The Santa Fe aced its side crash tests, earning five out of five stars in this department. It also received hard marks thanks to its inclusion of the SmartSense driver-assist tech package that helps prevent the vehicle from ever being in a collision. This package includes forward-collision avoidance assist, driver attention warning, blind-spot collision warning, and more.
  2. 2020 Hyundai Tucson. This one also earned the five overall stars by the NHTSA and earned top consideration in front and side-crash testings. Like the Hyundai Santa Fe, this model comes equipped with that comprehensive safety package that will keep drivers and occupants safer on the road.
  3. 2020 Hyundai Kona. This is the latest of Hyundai's SUV models and was only first tested by the NHTSA in 2019. That 2019 model earned both a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from NHTSA and as the 2020 version has already earned top marks from the former, we expect IIHS to once again applaud this model.

When asked about the fantastic safety ratings these models earned by the NHTSA, Mike O'Brien, vice president of Hyundai Motor America's product, corporate, and digital planning outfit, had this to say: "Driver safety is our top priority. From Hyundai SmartSense to now Rear Occupat Alert, we are always looking to implement the latest in safety technologies, in order to provide enhanced safety for all of our customers." The Rear occupant alert system, which is available on select models, will be equipped on all Hyundai U.S. models starting in 2022.
